Greetings:
As a dedicated user of the HP-UX operating system, you may be
interested in the latest news regarding its continued support.
Hewlett-Packard is committed to support HP-UX through the year
2000. This extended life and the quality of that life is
something you can influence.
The lifecycle for Hewlett-Packard (HP) software includes
providing support that helps to assure a long-term viable
environment for its operating systems. HP created a group to
provide this extended support for your HP software -- the
Software Technology Division (SWT), part of the HP Worldwide
Customer Support Operations.
SWT has successfully provided this type of customer-driven
support for the Domain, MPE V, and RTE operating systems. SWT
now also supports the HP-UX operating system (Motorola-based
68000 HP Series 300 and Series 400 only). By separating support
of the Series 300/400 HP-UX operating system from that of Series
700 PA-RISC HP-UX, HP can provide an appropriate focus for each.
You'll hear more about this change at upcoming users group
conferences and in future communications from us.
We would like to work with you to identify the support that will
allow you to maintain, mix (interoperate) or migrate your HP-UX
operating system environment. Our goal is to provide you a
stable environment and critical functionality for Series 300/400
HP-UX interoperability and migration. As part of this
environment, you can expect SWT to provide:
o Current product engineering (maintenance of existing systems,
fixes to serious/critical defects, patch delivery)
o Interoperability enhancements (with Series 700, PA-RISC HP-UX)
o Customer driven enhancements (such as extended peripheral
support)
o Improved communication of the availability of software updates,
as well as improved distribution of those updates
o Improved methods to receive and respond to product requests or
suggestions
o Specials, where your additional investments for unique
requirements pay off in extended use of current systems
o Migration paths and upgrade programs to move you to open systems
over time and at reasonable cost
o Incentives to renew or add support contracts
The recent announcement of the Common Open Software Environment
(COSE) should have no immediate effect on SWT and the support
you receive. A goal of the companies (HP, IBM, SCO, SUN, Univel
and USL that support COSE is to preserve compatibility of existing
applications on existing operating systems as they evolve to a
common environment.
You probably received the HP-UX 9.0 release recently and have
yet to install it. Upgrading to HP-UX 9.0 is still a wise move.
HP-UX 9.0 incorporates the latest revisions of industry
standards, including those from the Open Software Foundation
(OSF) and X/Open.
We hope you will work with us to identify your needs for
necessary enhancements. One way to do this is through your
involvement with HP workstation users groups such as InterWorks
(U.S.A.), HP/Works (U.K./Europe) and InterWorks Japan. We
encourage you to become a member of your local group. SWT will
be at the InterWorks '93 Conference April 25-28, 1993 in
Phoenix, Arizona (U.S.A.) and plans ongoing participation with
each user group.
HP recognizes the diversity of Motorla-based workstation users
(technical and industrial), and is committed to provide ongoing
support and enhancements for Series 300/400 HP-UX operating
system products. As with other operating systems, the funding
used to create and deliver this support comes from revenue
generated by software support contracts. We can't succeed
without you. You can help:
o By assuring with your feedback that we're investigating and
solving your priority problems
o By feeding these back to us formally and informally, through
HP's customer feedback process, through surveys, letters and
phone calls and by your active involvement in users groups,
such as InterWorks
o And, most importantly, by maintaining your support contracts.
You can drive the future of the HP-UX operating system. You'll
hear more from us in communications such as this one and through
customer visits and surveys that we will make. Take the time to
let us know what you need. Together, we can make a difference.
Sincerely,
HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY
Mark Solle
General Manager
Software Technology Division
P.S. Make a difference in the future of the HP-UX operating
system. Please fill out the enclosed post-paid survey and place
it in return mail. We want to hear from you.
